Ajith Kumara is a dedicated professional serving in the Sri Lanka Scientific Service (SLSS) with extensive expertise in forensic ballistics. Since joining the Government Analyst’s Department in 2010 as an Assistant Government Analyst in the Forensic Ballistic Laboratory, he has played a pivotal role in forensic investigations, eventually rising to the position of Senior Assistant Government Analyst and currently serving as the Head of the Forensic Ballistic Laboratory.


With a wealth of experience in forensic casework, Ajith has handled all pivotal firearms-related cases in Sri Lanka, and he is conducting crucial crime scene investigation, forensic analyses, and providing expert evidence in court. His contributions extend to training and capacity building, where he delivers lectures and training sessions to the Sri Lanka Police, Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO), Military Police officers in the Sri Lanka Army, and other law enforcement agencies related to forearms, enhancing their forensic knowledge and investigative capabilities.


Beyond forensic investigations, Ajith contributes to national security initiatives, serving as a member of the Firearms and Ammunition Procurement Team for the Sri Lanka Navy, the Firearms Act Amendment Committee, and the Firearms Safety Committee of Sri Lanka. His expertise is further recognized through his active memberships in professional organizations, including the Asian Forensic Science Network (AFSN) and the Medico-Legal Society of Sri Lanka.


His research interests lie in forensic ballistics, with a focus on gunshot residue analysis, bullet ricochet, shooting distance determination adaptation of ammunitions and Improvised/Home-made firearms. As a forensic expert, Ajith remains committed to advancing forensic science in Sri Lanka, ensuring scientific accuracy, justice, and national security through his specialized knowledge and leadership in the field.
